HIGHLIGHTS: NUDES

Modigliani's nudes are appealingly modern and traditional at the same time. Modigliani took a known subject in art history and modernized it by making his sitters overtly sexy and engaging instead of passive and historical. He also borrowed from African art, such as mask-like faces to add mystery and symbolic power to his depictions. In so doing, he personally helped extend the Western tradition of painting nudes.
