CONSTANTIN BRANCUSI (1876-1957)

Romanian sculptor. He reportedly walked from Romania to Paris, so eager was he to see the art there, especially that of Auguste Rodin. While Brancusi's early sculpture was clearly inspired by Rodin in their soft surfaces, he soon developed a shiny, stream-lined look that was very much the opposite of Rodin's style.

Brancusi met Modigliani in 1908 through their mutual supporter, Dr. Paul Alexandre. Brancusi taught the Italian how to make sculpture and it became Modigliani's primary medium for the next five years.
