PAUL GUILLAUME (1891-1934)

French art patron and collector. If the twentieth century brought a new kind of artist, the Paul Guillaume was a new kind of patron. Unlike most patrons of the past, Guillaume was from a humble background and was as concerned with the lives and aesthetic aims of artists as he was with the money generated by their work. One Modigliani portrait of Guillaume is inscribed Novo Pilota or 'new helmsman,' indicating the Frenchman's place at the forefront of the art world of his time.
